On September 20, 2022, California signed the AB 2208 Act, which will phase out and prohibit the sale of mercury-containing fluorescent lamps in California. From January 1, 2024, spiral or bayonet compact fluorescent lamps shall not be sold in California as newly manufactured products; From January 1, 2025, pin type compact fluorescent lamps and linear fluorescent lamps shall not be sold in California as newly manufactured products.
About compact fluorescent lamps
Compact fluorescent lamp refers to a compact low-voltage mercury-containing discharge light source, wherein the fluorescent coating converts part of the ultraviolet energy generated by mercury discharge into visible light, and includes the following features:
1. Single-ended power supply, lamp holder including but not limited to screw type, bayonet type, two pins and four pins;
2. Integrated ballast or non-integrated ballast;
3. The color temperature is between 1700K and 24000K, and the DUV is between+0.024 and -0.024;
4. Fluorescent lamps of all diameters and lengths;
5. Fluorescent lamps of all sizes and shapes for directional and non-directional installation, including but not limited to PL, spiral, double tube, triple double tube, 2D, U-shaped and round.
About Linear Fluorescent Lamps
Linear fluorescent lamp refers to a low voltage mercury-containing discharge light source, wherein the fluorescent coating converts part of the ultraviolet energy generated by mercury discharge into visible light, and includes the following features:
1. Two-terminal power supply, lamp holder includes but is not limited to single-pin, two-pin, concave double-contact;
2. The color temperature is between 1700K and 24000K, and the DUV is between+0.024 and -0.024;
3. All lamp diameters, including but not limited to T5, T8, T10 and T12;
4. The length of lamp tube is between 0.5 and 8.0 feet;
5. All lamp tube shapes, including but not limited to linear, U-shaped and circular.
The bill exempted the following special purpose fluorescent lamps
1. Lamp for image capture and projection; Including copying, printing, direct or pre-processing, lithography, film and video projection and holography;
2. High UV content and one of the following products:
? High UV content and UV power greater than 2 mW/klm;
? Lamps used for sterilization, such as DNA destruction, with a peak wavelength of about 253.7 nm;
? For lamps used for disinfection or fly catching, between 250 and 800 nm, the radiation power at the wavelength of 250 to 315 nm accounts for at least 5% of the total radiation, or the radiation power at the wavelength of 315 to 400 nm accounts for at least 20% of the total radiation;
? Lamps used to generate ozone, whose main purpose is to emit radiation of about 185.1 nm;
? Lamps used for symbiosis of corals, yellow algae, and yellow algae, whose radiation power of 400 to 480 nm accounts for at least 40% of the total radiation power of 250 to 800 nm;
? Sunlight, which is designed to contain one or more ultraviolet lamps, is used to irradiate any part of the human body through ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength between 200 and 400 nm in the air to induce skin tanning.
3. Lamp for medical or veterinary diagnosis or treatment, or for medical equipment;
4. Lamps for manufacturing or quality control of pharmaceutical products;
5. Lamps for spectroscopic and photometric applications; For example, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, molecular spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, non-dispersive infrared (NDIR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), medical analysis, ellipsometry, layer thickness measurement, process monitoring or environmental monitoring;
6. A lamp used by academic and research institutions to conduct research projects and experiments.
