Introduction to the IEC62133 test

In December 2012, the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) officially released the international safety standards for battery products IEC62133 second edition IEC62133:2012 (ed2.0), which is mainly aimed at containing alkaline or acidic electrolyte monomer battery and battery pack and portable sealed battery and battery safety requirements (lithium battery, nickel metal hydride batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries type). The battery laboratory will conduct in-depth analysis of the content of the new IEC 62133, so that customers can have an in-depth understanding of the new IEC 62133 standard requirements.

Mandatory internal short circuit, overcharge (pack), transportation test and lithium battery design are added to the test items. At the same time, the charging steps and the continuous low voltage charging test items have been updated.


1. Charging steps after the update

According to the requirements of the new IEC 62133, when the cell is tested for the following three external short circuits, thermal shock, extrusion, and battery tests for external short circuits, the cell or battery charging shall be performed under the maximum and minimum charging temperature limits.

2. Added forced internal short circuit test

The purpose of this test is to simulate the potential danger degree of metal dust, scrap particles and other impurities that may enter the cell during the manufacturing process, and Pierce the diaphragm between the positive and negative poles and cause an internal short circuit. The test object is a cylindrical or prismatic cell. The test is currently only available in South Korea, Japan, Switzerland and France.

3. New transportation test

According to the new IEC6213 requirements, the lithium battery must pass the relevant tests in accordance with the requirements of IEC62281, and its test items are the same as UN38, 3 test items. Therefore, if the manufacturer can provide documents proving that it meets the requirements of transportation, the transportation test is not required to be tested, and the transportation test is directly qualified.

IEC 62133 mainly consists of the following tests:
